Project Overview
Castleton Mill is a grade two listed original flax mill, situated on the fringe of Leeds city centre. It has been re-purposed as a collection of creative work spaces and studios that are high quality yet affordable. More than just a building, the vision is to develop an ecosystem of experience-led mentorship, collaboration and connection, where anyone who wants to take part can succeed and grow. Architectural Emporium have designed building interiors and the new external branding and signage.

“We have worked with Architectural Emporium on a number of jobs over many years, including Shears Yard (restaurant), Wire (nightclub), The Faversham (event venue), Castleton Mill (creative office space) and Obonjan (Croatian island retreat). They have always provided creative and detailed solutions to assist our businesses. Their designs have stood the test of time.”
Steven Allison Owner/Operator of Castleton Mill and Co Owner of Shears Yard

The aim was to restore and enhance the original features, as well as promote the cultural significance of the existing building. Interventions are designed in a small palette of modern industrial materials (birch faced plywood, stainless steel and polycarbonate) that can be read concurrently with the listed masonry building without compromising its robust elegance.

Bespoke toilets, kitchens, corridors, lighting, internal signage and wall linings run through the scheme unifying the different spaces and creating meeting points within the building for users to share and interact. The development features co-work space and a series of different sized studios.
