Project Overview
Architectural Emporium have been working with The Climbing Hangar for a number of years. Having worked on the original Hangar interiors in Sandhills, Liverpool, we have carried out updates to Matchworks, Speke and developed a brand identity and set of component parts applied to each new project. Each Hangar is unique as they are located within existing light-industrial buildings close to city centres, with the exception of Bristol, which is located within a former city centre department store.

“Since our first site, and now across eleven locations nationwide, Architectural Emporium have played a key role in the development and expansion of our bouldering centres. Their practical and adaptable design approach has allowed us to evolve our brand while applying it cost-effectively and sensibly to a wide range of building types and environments.”
Paul Skyner, Head of Building Development, Climbing Hangar

Sustainability is at the core of the business with sustainable transport links and cycling encouraged. Repurposing vacant buildings is inherently sustainable and helps to animate light industrial areas by providing accessible bouldering centres. The front of house areas are centred around socialising and serve as a hub for the climbing community with a cafe and reception.

Architectural Emporium have now completed schemes in Bristol, Edinburgh, Exeter, Liverpool, Reading, Sheffield and Southampton and have a number of others in the pipeline across the UK. Many of the photos feature Sheffield’s centre which was designed in part to aid the training of Shauna Coxsey with an Olympic climbing wall. Climbing Hangar’s are aimed at entry level climbers up to Olympic athletes. They are inclusive and focussed on fostering a sense of community.

“Andy and the Team at AE have helped have transformed both how we design our spaces and how we present our brand. Pragmatic and easy to work with, it feels like we have in house design integrating seamlessly with us and other contractors. A cornerstone in delivering great projects on time and on budget.”
Ged MacDomhnaill, Founder, Climbing Hangar
