Project Overview
Architectural Emporium were initially engaged to review how the Arts Centre functioned and how it could improve legibility, accessibility, functionality, invite more users into spaces and reveal what lies beyond from within better quality public spaces. The project feasibility study revealed how we could improve spaces and circulation to increase visitor numbers, improve the experience for those visiting, whilst also improving internal collaboration and functionality.

The Grade I listed building had been extended in 2008 with an elegant, but inflexible and austere wing. We sought simple modest interventions that worked with the building fabric. Proposals were rooted in the consultation carried out.
As the building features many different uses, which were named as strands during the consultation process. Each strand featured different client representatives with some cross over. AE took detailed briefs from each client group. We then outlined the individual briefs, identified areas of commonality and difference and devised a series of options that addressed the different requirements.

Following feedback from the whole group, comprehensive proposals were developed for each key space and funding sought. It wasn’t possible to fund all interventions, so phase one tackled the main entrance, café, child engagement space, toilets and access to the gallery, gardens and spaces beyond.

When funding was secured to address the above, we then revisited the feasibility study, took an independent brief and produced costed options that explored different ways to meet the spatial requirements. We challenged the brief to highlight ways that would have a bigger impact, but went beyond the parameters of the client brief which wanted to retain the existing café location. We were able to highlight the architectural, legibility and commercial benefits of moving the café counter.

We explored and tested numerous ideas, producing sketch 3d models for each proposal. During design phases we carried out a series of engaging collaborative workshops to review proposals to filter options and choose colours, furniture and materials for the space. We decided on locations where we could introduce artist commissions and helped to choose the artists to collaborate with. Granby workshop provided the café counter, Babak Ganjei proposed the tiled fascia to the gallery reception and Sumuya Khader proposed the entrance screen tile design.

Phase 2 tackled the issues raised during the feasibility study regarding the existing performance space proportions, lack of character, and hidden location. It also addressed the poor performance of the bistro, which was not capable of hosting events due to a central island and level change across the space. AE developed a series of proposals for review that simplified the space to reveal the elegant proportions and features of the existing building. Following a series of client workshops, detailed proposals were then developed for the practical and functional pods we proposed at the extremities of the space. They have been designed to accommodate a sound lobby, a dispense bar, necessary storage for room setting and a DJ/sound booth. The pods facilitate the main space being used for weddings, conferences, dinners, events and performances.
"The new hub has transformed our visitor experience and created a vibrant, dynamic space whilst providing all the facilities we require. AE were very good to work with, combining the best of professional skills with an ability to collaborate well. We are excited to work with AE again on the future phases of our redevelopment."
