Project Overview
Loading Bay is a new pop-up theatre and arts space created from a derelict storage depot in the city centre, specifically for Bradford’s tenure as UK City of Culture.
The venue opened in March 2025 following a 5 month renovation project and fit-out. It has brought a true Bradford 2025 buzz to the heart of the city, and allowed a wide range of work to be presented, from new theatre commissions, to gigs, comedy, cabaret, exhibitions and immersive experiences. Spread across three atmospheric and fully accessible floors, the renovated space includes a 180-seat black box theatre, a flexible basement space and a gallery, as well as a further two floors of rehearsal and production space.

Repurposing an empty building to create a new cultural space carried significant environmental benefits and embedded sustainability at every stage, saving embodied carbon, minimising demolition waste and reducing the need for raw materials. Approximately 35-40 tonnes of steel was removed from basement and recycled. The lift was reused in situ with new parts saving 10 tonnes of new steel. A local workforce and wherever possible, local materials were utilised.

A new temporary structure was constructed externally to inhabit the entrance yard and host visitors as a breakout space. From its opening, Loading Bay proved a successful draw, bringing audiences into an inviting and energetic space with a deliberately rough-hewn, DIY aesthetic across front-of-house and performance spaces. More than 30,000 people visited the venue from March to October, with many events performed to sell-out audiences.

Loading Bay has been central to the success of Bradford 2025, creating a flexible and welcoming venue for truly innovative programming in the heart of the city centre. It is also a standout example of Bradford 2025’s commitment to circularity and resourcefulness with its approach to sustainability. The venue is to reopen in 2026 as a permanent venue serving the local community.
